Mechanism of actionDNA gyrase inhibitor; broad spectrum including Pseudomonas.
Indication / reason for useBacterial conjunctivitis; bacterial corneal ulcer (labelled indication).
Usual adult dosingConjunctivitis: 1-2 drops q2-4h for 2 days, then QID. Corneal ulcer: 1-2 drops q30 min while awake and q4-6h overnight initially, then taper.
PreservativeBAK 0.005%
Contact lensesNo lens wear during infection.
Common / important adverse effectsBurning, stinging, punctate keratitis, white crystalline corneal precipitates (less than ciprofloxacin).
Contraindications & cautionsFluoroquinolone hypersensitivity.
