Mechanism of actionLymphocyte function-associated antigen-1 (LFA-1) antagonist; blocks LFA-1/ICAM-1 interaction, reducing T-cell mediated ocular surface inflammation.
Indication / reason for useSigns and symptoms of dry eye disease. Symptom benefit can appear by 2 weeks.
Usual adult dosing1 drop in each eye twice daily, ~12 h apart.
PreservativePreservative-free single-use vials , a preservative-free option exists
Contact lensesRemove lenses before use; reinsert after 15 minutes.
Common / important adverse effectsInstillation-site irritation, dysgeusia (metallic taste, very characteristic), reduced visual acuity, tearing.
Contraindications & cautionsHypersensitivity to components.
Pregnancy / lactationNo adequate human data; minimal systemic absorption.
Practice notesWarn about the transient metallic taste so patients don't discontinue.
