Mechanism of actionRod-shaped insert placed in the inferior cul-de-sac; slowly dissolves over ~24 h, thickening the tear film and stabilizing it.
Indication / reason for useModerate-severe dry eye, especially keratoconjunctivitis sicca not controlled by drops; exposure/neurotrophic keratitis.
Usual adult dosingOne insert in the inferior fornix once daily (some patients twice daily).
PreservativePreservative-free , a preservative-free option exists
Contact lensesNot for use with contact lenses in place.
Common / important adverse effectsTransient blurring, foreign-body sensation, matting of lashes, occasional insert extrusion.
Contraindications & cautionsHypersensitivity to hydroxypropyl cellulose.
Pregnancy / lactationLow risk.
Practice notesTeach placement technique; if blur is bothersome, insert at bedtime.
