Mechanism of actionBinds the 50S ribosomal subunit; bacteriostatic; Gram-positive and some atypical (Chlamydia) coverage.
Indication / reason for useBacterial conjunctivitis and blepharitis; neonatal ocular prophylaxis (gonococcal/chlamydial); lubricating antibacterial cover for abrasions and exposure.
Usual adult dosingRibbon into the lower fornix up to 6×/day (acute) or at bedtime (blepharitis).
PreservativePreservative-free ointment base , a preservative-free option exists
Contact lensesDo not wear lenses while treating an ocular infection.
Common / important adverse effectsTransient blur, mild irritation, rare hypersensitivity.
Contraindications & cautionsMacrolide hypersensitivity.
Pregnancy / lactationConsidered low risk; commonly used.
