Mechanism of actionPotent fluorinated glucocorticoid; broad suppression of inflammatory mediators.
Indication / reason for useSteroid-responsive inflammatory conditions of the anterior segment; Dextenza for post-surgical inflammation/pain and allergic conjunctivitis itching.
Usual adult dosingMaxidex 1-2 drops q1h initially, tapering to 4-6×/day; shake well.

Contact lensesDo not wear lenses during treatment.
Common / important adverse effectsIOP elevation, cataract, delayed healing, infection potentiation.
Contraindications & cautionsActive epithelial herpes simplex, fungal, mycobacterial infection.
Pregnancy / lactationLimited data.
Practice notesDextenza avoids adherence problems by delivering a tapering dose over ~30 days from the canaliculus.
