Mechanism of actionDNA gyrase inhibitor; strong Gram-negative including Pseudomonas, weaker against streptococci.
Indication / reason for useBacterial conjunctivitis; bacterial corneal ulcer.
Usual adult dosingCorneal ulcer: 2 drops q15 min for 6 h, then 2 drops q30 min for the rest of day 1; day 2 q1h; days 3-14 q4h.
PreservativeBAK 0.006%
Contact lensesNo lens wear during infection.
Common / important adverse effectsWhite crystalline corneal precipitate in the epithelial defect (common, reversible), lid crusting, bad taste.
Contraindications & cautionsFluoroquinolone hypersensitivity.
Pregnancy / lactationLimited data.
Practice notesThe corneal precipitate can be mistaken for worsening infiltrate, it clears after stopping.
