Mechanism of actionCellulose-derivative demulcent; coats and hydrates the ocular surface, prolongs tear break-up time.
Indication / reason for useSymptomatic relief of dry eye / ocular surface irritation; adjunct in evaporative and aqueous-deficient DED.
Usual adult dosing1-2 drops in affected eye(s) as needed; preservative-free vials for >4×/day or for lens wearers.
PreservativePurite / stabilized oxychloride in bottles; PF single-use vials available , a preservative-free option exists
Contact lensesPreservative-free presentations may be used with soft lenses in place; avoid BAK-preserved bottles with lenses in.
Common / important adverse effectsTransient blur, mild stinging.
Contraindications & cautionsNone significant. If symptoms persist >72 h or worsen, re-evaluate.
Pregnancy / lactationConsidered low risk; minimal systemic absorption.
Practice notesHigher-viscosity gels give longer relief but more blur, reserve for night or severe cases.
