Mechanism of actionLow-dose selective alpha-2 agonist; constricts conjunctival venules with minimal arteriolar effect, so far less rebound than imidazoline decongestants.
Indication / reason for useOTC relief of ocular redness.
Usual adult dosing1 drop in the affected eye(s) every 6-8 h as needed.
PreservativeBAK 0.01%
Contact lensesRemove lenses before use; reinsert after 10 min.
Common / important adverse effectsMinimal; rare mild irritation. Rebound redness uncommon at this concentration.
Contraindications & cautionsCaution with MAOIs / tricyclics; not for children <5 y; caution in severe cardiovascular disease.
Pregnancy / lactationLimited data; low systemic exposure at this dose.
